Snack Run

Posted on Monday 27 June 2005

I think my tastes are changing. This past weekend, in the middle of watching “Hitch” on DVD, Randy announced that he needed a snack. It wasn’t just a general desire for something sweet or a handful of chips. No, Randy needed a Zebra Cake. I must admit that I support these moments of craving clarity. Too often, we can’t decide what it is we want to eat and spend the next twenty minutes lobbing comments to each other like “Whatever sounds good to you, honey” which just gets us more frustrated and leaves us hungrier.

This moment of decisiveness needed to be harnessed and applauded. We stopped the DVD, jumped into Randy’s car and sped down the street to our nearest grocery store. It was closed (9:05 p.m.(!) — well, it is a small town) and so we went to the gas station next door.

Eureka! Down the snack aisle we found the much-longed-for Zebra Cakes and as a special bonus to Randy, Hostess Apple Pies! We don’t see these much around here for some reason and as they have historically been Randy’s rare indulgent snack of choice, we bought two. I chose a package of Ho Hos. (I’d put links here but Interstate Brands Corp. who makes Hostess snacks doesn’t seem to have a website. Weird.)

No More Ho Hos I think Randy’s snack was quite fufulling to his craving so that’s good. Me? I now remember why I stopped eating Ho Hos and Ding Dongs. For over a year, I worked next door to a bakery outlet and enjoyed a steady diet of Hostess products. I suspected it might have ruined the Hostess experience for me and now I’m sure. The Ho Hos tasted like sweetened lard wrapped in a tasteless, cake-like substance. Oh wait, that’s what they really are. Yeah, no more Ho Hos for me. Time to find a new nutritionally-bankrupt snack to enjoy. Shouldn’t be too hard.

Brian, you’re fabulous. I must have been too much on a “sugar high” when I Googled for them. :-)
