On Saturday, we boarded My Old Kentucky Dinner Train with our close friends Chris and Heather. It operates out of Bardstown, KY which is about 40 miles south of Louisville.
I’d never been on a train before so this was a nice adventure. The dining cars were comfortable and lined with a nice wood panelling (as opposed to that nasty stuff one often sees lining the walls of basements). Although not as plush as it probably was back in the ’40s, the experience made me yearn to do “real” travelling by train especially in Europe. Unfortunatley, travel by train in the U.S. has been prohibitively expensive (although I haven’t checked prices lately and now with the fuel surcharges on airline tickets, it may be a better deal if one has the time). Besides, for a trip to somewhere, I’m usually too much in a rush to get to my destination to spend the time on a train looking at scenery. How sad really.
Although this was a small exercise in railway travel and mostly about the food and good company, I found that I enjoyed the experience. Hopefully, we’ll get to try the real thing someday.
