One Autumn Day

This really is my favorite time of year. I think it may stem back to when I was in school and autumn meant a new beginning for me. Growing up in the Seattle area I didn’t get to see the changes of the leaves like I do here in the south and when we lived in the midwest. It still amazes me to see the change that can happen overnight where the leaves suddenly change and look like they are on fire.

What I do miss about autumn in Seattle is the cool crisp air in the mornings, the dew on the pine trees releasing a fresh clean fragrance. I’ve read that olfactory memories are unusually emotionally powerful. When I was in college in northeast Tennessee, a group of my friends and I drove up to Roan Mountain and when I stepped out of the car, that smell of wet pine hit me and I felt like I was back in the northwest. It brought on a feeling of comfort and complete happiness. Wouldn’t it be nice if one could bottle that?

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it,
and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth
    seeking the successive autumns.

Lovely, Karen! George and I must be kindred spirits. I knew I liked her.
