A Silent Sigh

Today is my last day at my current job and it’s really been hard to leave. My duties themselves are not terribly challenging unless it comes to sheer volume of work at times but the reasons I took this job in the first place were the great benefits (e.g., 3 weeks vacation) and the people I’d be working with.

The company I work for has a contract with the state to do assessments of the needs of children who are committed to the commonwealth. Basically, I work with a lot of people who are licensed counselors and/or have master’s level degrees in social work, or some mental health field. It makes for quite an interesting mix but what I like is that most of the people I work with actually like other people. I’ve worked at other places where there’s at least one person who seems to hate the whole world but not so where I am now. There are times when I feel like I might be being analyzed by my co-workers, but at least they’re qualified to do it and not just going on the last article they read in “O: The Oprah Magazine” (nothing against “O” — I do read it occasionally). Really, they are all a bunch of good listeners and tend to be very cooperative.

Out of these coworkers I’ve found some real kindred spirits and most of all, it will be difficult to leave such dear friends. I feel so thankful and fortunate to have been invited into their lives if only for a short time.
