A Little Tai Chi, Anyone?

Early morning Tai Chi on the Bund, Shanghai, 1977

Randy and I joined a gym for the next couple of months on a trial basis and last night we tried out the beginning Tai Chi class (Yang style, if you’re curious). Randy was much more at home having practiced some martial arts in the past but I felt like I’d entered a strange, unknown world. Although I don’t subscribe to the philosophical beliefs about chi, I’ve always been somewhat fascinated by the lifelong practice of the soft style martial art. I believe there is benefit in practicing something beautiful, practical and healthy. How often does the average westerner take the time to breath and concentrate? I’d like to at least learn one short form if possible. I barely could figure out the basic walk last night so this may take a little time. . .

We took another class with another instructor and it was an even better experience. This class was in the Cheng Ming style which has 99 movements of which we now know 3. This may take a while to learn . . .
