I’ve started to read “The Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis. As the author mentions in the introduction, this book is one that one often receives as a gift or owns but does not necessarily read. I am guilty of that. I received this book from my church for my high school graduation. I tried to read it on a couple of other occasions but couldn’t get into it. Randy said that now that I’m an adult, I should have a better go.
In the introduction, Lewis talks about the concept that Satan is not the opposite of God, that really Satan is the opposite of Michael. (Lewis, of course, states this much more eloquently.) I know that but I never stopped to think about it. I believe we give Satan too much credit. I believe he is real and trying to influence us but in the end, he is just a fallen created being. The idea that there cannot be good without evil is false.
There is a worship song that we sing at church that has the lyrics “God is bigger than the air we breathe, the world we leave.” God is bigger than anything we can imagine, even the universe. When I say, “My daddy is bigger than your daddy” I mean it in a completely different way now. Lately I kept seeing the influence that Satan has on this world and it seemed to overshadow anything positive. Refocusing my attention to the truth that God is immeasurable has strengthened my spirit.
If I get all of this just from one line in the introduction to this book, I can’t wait to see what the rest of the book does for me.

This book is really good but also tough to read. There’s so much to think about that I feel like I plodded along. Still, Lewis has amazing insights into the nature of man and it only reinforces the truth that we need God.
