I have to confess. I’ve had some caffeine today. I swore it off when I found out I was pregnant but have since been advised that the studies on its affects on pregnancy are controversial and without solid proof. Nonetheless, except for a sip of Randy’s Cokes twice, I’ve been good . . . until today. I drank a small Coke from McDonald’s.
I probably won’t have caffeine again for a while though. My friend Leslie told me to drink something caffeinated before I have an ultrasound so the baby will be moving around — basically, get the baby hopped-up for a show. Does that count as drugging my child? I hope not as it sounded like good advice to me.
This lack of caffeine has been tough. I would often rely on it on those days when I just needed a boost to get me awake. Randy and I lived on Penguin Caffeinated Peppermints on busy Sunday mornings especially. Now that I’m pregnant and I find myself tired most days, I don’t have my easy pick-me-up to rely on.
I know it’s not so bad. Sure, in relation to the bigger issues in this world this doesn’t even come close to rating. I miss caffeine though. A decaffeinated eggnog latté just isn’t the same as a regular one. I mean, I won’t turn it away if you offer to buy me one, but I’ll be missing that little zing that would add some cheer to the holiday season.
Oh, blessed caffeine. Someday we will be reunited.

We actually give women a Coke in the hospital if the baby isn’t moving as much as normal. Actually the sugar rush from a Coke probably effects the baby much more the small amount of caffeine since a Sprite produces the same effect. But your right a little caffeine isn’t enough to hurt baby or cause an addition… nothing like a poor newborn having caffeine withdrawal!
My OB actually told me I could have one caffinated drink daily during the first trimester. By the time Ava was born, I was back up to a pot of coffee a day. Don’t feel bad about cheating. Remember that another one of your nurse friends does whatever is contraindicated and usually turns out okay! I am so excited for you! I think of you every time I eat my molasses!
