On a recent Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah interviewed the pastor of a Unity church in Kansas City who is promoting a complaint-free world via using purples bracelets as a reminder to the wearer to not complain. They are getting a lot of pres, from People Magazine to the Today Show. Although I don’t agree with the church’s theology, I do appreciate the promotion of not complaining. Just like in everything else, the idea is that if you resist complaining for 21 days straight, it will become a habit.
I don’t know about you (I’m about to complain here) but there are a couple of people in my life (besides me) that I’d like to give a bracelet to! I can’t always easily choose who is in my life (e.g., family members, coworkers, etc.) and thus I can find myself subjected to people stuck in a complaining rut. Obviously, the circumstances under which some folks live should give them a right to complain, but there are those who just see 80+% of life in a negative way. It is so exhausting to be around them.
Well, I’m sure Randy is tired of hearing my rants every day about some injustice or poor attitude that I had to put up with. I don’t have a purple bracelet, but I’m going to work on not complaining. I figure that if I concentrate on the good (count your blessings, as it were) my own attitude about life and its possibilities will brighten. Truly, in the bigger scheme of things, I have little to nothing to complain about: Randy and I have a great marriage, our extended family is alive and relatively healthy, we have a nice place to live, good friends, plenty to eat, jobs that provide us a decent income and a baby on the way. We are blessed.
